Abstract:

Ephemera printed and distributed by the Apostleship of Prayer, a Catholic organization, including prayer cards and newsletters, and a list of published materials in the library's bibliographic holdings.

History of the Apostleship of Prayer

The Apostleship of Prayer was founded in 1844 by a Father Francois Xavier Gautrelet, S.J. in Vals, France. The group promotes a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the practice of the Morning or Daily Offering, a prayer devoting one's day to God. In the 1880s, the Apostleship of Prayer began publishing monthly the League Leaflet, which announced the Pope's prayer intentions for the following month, along with short reflections on the topics. Members of the Apostleship pledge to pray for these intentions daily. The organization has been described by Pope Pius XII in 1944 as "one of the most efficacious means for the salvation of souls," and by Pope John Paul II in 1985 as "a precious treasure from the Pope's heart and the Heart of Christ." In the United States, the Apostleship of Prayer had its headquarters in New York City for many years. It is now headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The international headquarters for the organization are in Rome, with national offices in many countries. Today, the Apostleship of Prayer has over forty million members worldwide.
